A commercial oven can be considered a work of art in and of itself. For years, the French have been using them to bake their famous pastries, their croissants, their breads and their candies.
The kitchen-made treats are usually too flaky and too chewy, while the commercial varieties are often too brittle and too hard. So which is better? One or the other?
Brioche was first discovered in France, and is a simple, fluffy dish of dough which is kneaded by hand to form a nice shape and then baked until crispy on top. But it wasn’t until the end of the 18th century that an American, Edith Grundy introduced this treat to the rest of the world. It is now known as a cross between a croissant and a scone. It is soft, gooey and goes well with a number of cheeses.
Chocolate is a very popular item when baking bread. And how many of us don’t like our cookies and brownies with a nice thick layer of chocolate coating? If you ask most people, a good quality cookie will always beat a good quality brownie. The French would call it cristes. So if you are looking for a new selling point to your new oven, maybe try adding some chocolate.
It’s not only at Christmas time that new pastry chefs will use chocolates. Almond and Brioche Danish, who knew?
Brioche Danish is very thin but very flaky. It is especially great when made into brioche and then topped with jam or cream cheese.
There are a lot of chocolates out there. While some people might like it, the temptation is too much. Using chocolates instead of applesauce to make your cookies or brownies will save you money. And can add that extra little something extra to your cakes and pies.
Almond and Brioche Danish are very similar, however they taste slightly different. Almond is creamier and tastes good in cookies, while Brioche is more like Graham crackers and tastes great with chocolate.
Cinnamon is one of the oldest and most popular additions to cakes. It’s a spice that brings out the best in all things spicy and adding cinnamon to your cake will add a touch of magic to your special occasion.
Cinnamon coffee, which adds a nice boost to your morning coffee, is also popular. Once you have finished that cinnamon bun, why not finish off the day with a cup of coffee infused with cinnamon. Some people even add a little bit of it to their morning oatmeal for a tasty breakfast.
Instead of buying a package of spices, try making your own spice rack at home. Buy cinnamon sticks, cloves, ginger, orange peel and a whole bunch of other interesting spices. Try mixing them up and then simply adding them to your food.
What more is there to say about homemade food? It tastes amazing and is healthier than what you buy. It just makes sense to take advantage of the commercial ovens, as they are not going to last forever and it’s possible to use them to create some homemade goodies for you and your family.
